In today’s video review I will share with your guys our first impressions of the world’s thinnest 13-inch ultrabook. However this is not the only stand-out feature of the machine you are about to see. But let’s get straight to the point, with Acer Aspire S5.
The appearance is the first thing to impress about this Aspire ultrabook.
Its weight also contributes to its portability
It is said to be the world’s thinnest machine at only 15mm thickness at the thickest point of the brushed aluminum chassis. Nothing lacks in spite of the extremely thin profile, it has just been hidden and I will show you than later in the review. Its weight also contributes to its portability. The 1.2kg weight is a piece of cake to lift and carry even with one hand which is great news especially for the girls I am sure.
The 13.3-inch glossy TN display panel has an average performance. It works at 1366x768pixel resolution and provides a decent and even level of back lighting, strong colors and good contrast. However, for the money the display could have been much better than that.
The secret lies in S5’s Magic Flip mechanism
The island-style keyboard provides well spaced-out chiclet keys with short stroke that ensure a comfort even during fast typing. A back lighting would have been great of course but unfortunately none of the configurations features one. Another downside is the super minimized point keys which personally I find pretty irritating. The touchpad below provides plenty of surface for multitouch gestures.
The Acer Aspire S5 is an ultrabook available in a few different configurations, all running a 3rd generation Intel processors. 1.9GHz Core i7 with 4GB of system memory is the optimal set of hardware you can get on this model.
The hard drive storage can be either 128 or 256GB SSD
The hard drive storage can be either 128 or 256GB SSD. The graphics processing unit on board is Intel HD 4000.
Acer Green Instant On wakes the computer and prepares it for work in only 1.5 seconds saving you precious work time.
Despite its ultra thin case dimensions this ultrabook doesn’t lack the essential connection ports and slots. The secret lies in S5’s Magic Flip mechanism. Pressing a special key to the right of the keyboard will automatically reveal a special compartment on the back with set of ports. Two ports supporting the fast USB3 connection are available on board as well as a full-size HDMI with 1080p support and an SD card reader.
3rd gen 1.9GHz IntelCore i7 with 4GB RAM is the maximum you can get on this model
The reason why this machine stands out from the rest in its class is the presence of a Thunderbolt connector in its interface. Very few ultrabooks have so far provided such a port. Of course, following all the rules of being an ultrabook it doesn’t provide an optical drive. The two stereo speakers available on board deliver great and clear Dolby Home Theatre 4 sound. It is loud enough to save you space and money for desktop speakers.
Power Smart Battery technology is there to provide an extended battery life achieved through smart process usage of onboard power. The battery unit lasted around 5 hours of unplygged worktime.
Windows 7 is the operating system in charge on the Acer Aspire S5.
