The S upgrade is turning into a tradition with Apple’s devices so in this video review Digital Magnet will walk you through the upgrades Iphone 5S introduces.
The new iPhone is almost identical to its 5 brother. iPhone 5s is a beautifully crafted phone. Apple’s designers have paid attention to the smallest details.
The durable aluminum makes the whole construction elegant and sleek
It continues to fit perfectly in the hand and suggests premium build quality achieved through the mixture of premium materials. The durable aluminum makes the whole construction elegant and sleek on one hand but still solid and resistant on the other. Sapphire crystal, which is a material known for its exceptional toughness and scratch resistance, has been used both in the Home button and for the protection of the camera lens on the back. iPhone 5S sits comfortably in the hand not only because of its ergonomic design, but also thanks to its lightweight of 112g and thin – 7.6mm profile. iPhone 5s comes in three ever-popular hues – gold, silver and space gray.
Although it is hardly much different visually from its predecessor, the iPhone 5 still introduces some design changes.
By introducing Touch ID Apple wants to save you the precious time when you use your phone
The first one is the new true-tone dual-flash. Except for the fact that it provides more light, the dual flash here provides more than 1000 different color temperatures which results in a better white balance and less washed out colors.
The home button has also been redesigned. The iconic square logo in the middle has been removed and replaced with a fingerprint sensor, framed with a silver lining. By introducing Touch ID Apple wants to save you the precious time you lose to enter your smartphone password each time you want to check your phone. Instead, you can still stay well secured but able to quickly unlock your iphone when you need it. Touch ID reads fingerprints no matter the angle you place your finger at – portrait or landscape. The iPhone 5s is able to recognize your friends too, you can give fingerprint access to your phone to the people you trust.
The A7 is also the first 64-bit architecture chip on a smartphone
Since the S upgrade goes much further than a facelift, let’s find what hardware upgrade has happened under the hood of the 5S. Apple’s latest device is powered by the new dual-core A7 system-on-chip which delivers a significant power boost @ 1.3GHz. Just to make a quick comparison, its productivity levels make this CPU 2 times faster than the A6. The A7 is also the first 64-bit architecture chip on a smartphone. Since the latest iOS 7 is designed to work perfectly with 64-bit, it also shows its best on the 5S.
Yes a powerful and efficient processor with 64-bit architecture does a great job, but two is always better than one. That’s right iPhone 5s has two processors, along with A7 a second – M7 coprocessor takes care of the information coming from the motion sensors.
iPhone 5s has two processors
In this way the simple but yet distracting data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass is redirected and processed by the M7 coprocessor. It is something like a mini processor which is in charge of the information, coming from the sensors. In this way the A7 CPU handles all the ongoing processes without being distracted by minor sensor-initiated responses which automatically makes it more efficient. Video performance also scores better results thanks to Power VR 6430 graphics card. Performance is supported by 1GB of system memory just like on the iPhone 5.
Display here is exactly the same as the one on iPhone 5. Apple is not willing to take any risk and move from the comfortable 4 inches. The Retina Display delivers 1336×640 pixel resolution at a great 326ppi density. Thanks to the LED-backlit IPS technology this display is a pleasure to the eye.
When asked what they like the most about their smartphone many iPhone users say it’s the iSight camera. This is the next thing that has been improved in the 5S. Besides the stronger and better dual-flash we talked about in the beginning, and the sapphire crystal glass on top, the iSight camera now offers faster and more accurate autofocus.
The wider aperture of f/2.2 also contributes to the better low-light performance
This is achieved through using 15-zone matrix metering to ensure swift and sharp object focusing. The new iSight camera copes much better in low-light as it works with a 15% larger sensor. It means more light is allowed in and used for the photos. The wider aperture of f/2.2 also contributes to the better low-light performance.
Of course there is a whole bunch of new creative software features that come with the camera like slow motion 120 fps video, live video 3x zoom and also auto image stabilization which knows exactly when camera shake needs to be reduced.
The front FaceTime HD camera has also been improved with a better backside illumination sensor for attracting more light.
And to wrap the S upgrade up Apple has provided the iPhone 5s with a longer battery life as the battery piece here adds 120 mAh more to reach 1560mAh. In numbers it means around 20% more battery power due to the increased battery capacity and the power-efficient processor.
